Yesterday was Emancipation Day
Hear the Drums! The Adventure begins As Jamaicans
Celebrate
Emancipation
Day...
Dear Sherry,
Today is Emancipation Day... A Day when
we ‘Remember' the historic
End to Slavery in Jamaica...
On August 1st, 1838... Our Ancestors were given
back their Freedom...
Pride... Dignity... And so as not to forget, we
cherish and celebrate
This 'Historic Day'
Today... We remember...
The Maroons... Runaway slaves... Who lived up in
the hills of
Jamaica...
They were fierce warriors... who fought and
defeated the British.
Their most famous method of cooking was 'Jerking.'
This was popular as it prevented the British from
identifying
Their Villages in the hills.
Today... Jamaica's most popular food is 'Jerk'...
chicken... Pork...
And voted in Britian among the '50 things to eat
before you die.'
Today... We remember Marcus Garvey... And all the
other 'Heroes'
Who fought to make our 'Island' free.
Today we not only remember... But we celebrate
through our music...
Listen! Hear the Drums... See the Dance... Feel
the Spirit as Africa
lives on in Jamaica through the 'Kumina Dance'
See the chanting of the Drummer... As he calls on
the Spirit
Of his Ancestors...
The hynotic sound of the Drum will toss him on
the ground
As he Crawls... Squirms... When the beat echoes
in his skull...
The African heritage lives on...
Go a little further... hear the pulsating rhythm
of reggae...
Echoing in every village and town...
It's Celebration time... One week of wild
celebration...
For all Jamaicans all over the world...
